Douglas County is located between Colorado's two largest cities, Denver and Colorado Springs. The United States Census Bureau estimated the county population was 263,621 in 2006, a nearly 50 percent increase since the formal census in the year 2000, making Douglas County one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Parts of the county lie within the Pike National Forest and three state parks are in the county: Castlewood State Park, Chatfield State Park and Roxborough State Park.

The Douglas County School District is the largest employer in the county with more than 6,500 employees. More than 3,400 teachers work within the district with sixty-five percent of them holding masters degrees. In 2007, 92 percent of DCSD schools were rated “excellent” or “high” with a drop-out rate of less than one percent. The district currently consists of 71 schools that service nearly 53,000 students. Castle Rock, Parker, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Sedalia, Deckers, Louviers, Larkspur and parts of Aurora, Franktown and Littleton are all communities within the Douglas County School District. A countywide library system offers library locations in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Lone Tree, Louviers and Roxborough. The Douglas County Libraries offer the expected books, periodicals and other multi-media items along with meeting rooms, private study rooms, classes, events, online access and a book mobile.
